Track restoration project phase 1
Replacing the first 45 metres of track to ensure continuing safe operation of the train and to ensure the train is not damaged.
The specific issues to be resolved are
- Replacing the worn track that is damaging the train bogies. This item includes replacement of the technically complex “points” which allow the train to enter the workshop area.
- Replacing the rotten wooden planking and wooden structure supporting the tracks
- Supplement both of the original pier iron beams with new beams
- Rebuild the existing platform to match the new level of the track
We are taking a more sustainable approach with regard to the wood than simple replacement. We are using British Douglas Fir for the parts that do not require significant structural strength. This is the majority of the wood. The remainder we will use Ekki an african hardwood which is immensely strong with a very long life.
Initially it was difficult to assess the condition of the wrought iron support beams that are original to the pier. Unfortunately, one of these beams was found to be in a very poor state once some of the track had been removed and an inspection was possible. As the pier is listed and the state of the beam does not endanger the public or the structure of the pier, HPHA entered a long period of planning permission and consultation with conservation authorities. This has added many months to the date of completion for the works. The work required has also increased the cost of this project by several tens of thousands of pounds. These extra costs include fabrication and installation of new beams alongside the existing Victorian beams.
